Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
