EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
