The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
